Music as Healing: How BeyoncÊ and Kendrick Lamar Create Catharsis Through Sound

Image
How BeyoncÊ and Kendrick Lamar Create Catharsis Through Sound People often say that music helps them feel better, but it's easy to forget how powerful that is unless you truly think about it. One thing that really stuck out to me during this training is how music may help people let go of feelings they've been holding on to. For my final project, I propose that music helps people heal and let go of their feelings by giving them a safe environment to do so. BeyoncÊ's "Halo" (2008, USA) and Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" (2015, USA) are two works that really support this viewpoint. These songs are from very different times and styles of music, yet they both highlight how music can help you get through tough times. BeyoncÊ — Halo (2008, USA) Halo, which BeyoncÊ released on her album I Am... Sasha Fierce, rapidly became one of her most dramatic songs. This song smacks you in the chest as soon as the chorus starts, even if you don't know the tale ...

For a long time in my youth, I felt like people didn't understand me and treated me unfairly, even my parents, who were meant to care for me the most. I had a hard time feeling God's presence at those times. I used to think, "Is He against me too?" a lot.       Now, every time I hear God Is Not Against Me, it seems like the solution to that question. The song reminds me that God was never against me, even when horrible things happened. It provides voice to the hope I needed—saying that God is with me, that He loves me, and that sometimes we have to go through sorrow so we can realize how strong He makes us. ...

Musical Analysis: Growing Sideways by Noah Kahan Basic Information Title: Growing Sideways Composer/Songwriter: Noah Kahan Release Date: October 14, 2022 (on the album Stick Season ) Country of Origin: United States My Thoughts:      When I first heard Noah Kahan's "Growing Sideways," it struck me as one of the most honest songs I'd ever heard. The songs talk about sorrow, mental health, and feeling stuck in place in a really honest way that makes them approachable and healing, even if they are serious issues. The song doesn't seem too polished; it sounds like a discussion between the vocalist and the listener. It provides me with comfort, as if someone else has expressed through words and sounds the emotions I was unable to articulate adequately. The Musical Elements: 1. Melody     The vocal melody of Growing Sideways is soft and personal. Noah Kahan doesn't employ big jumps or high notes that stand out. Instead, his voice follows a straightforward...
